Carbon Dioxide Sensors for Monitoring Indoor Air Quality

The quality of the air we breathe is crucial for our health and wellbeing. Variations in the gas composition of ambient air can be unpleasant and potentially hazardous, causing respiratory irritation that can be symptomatic of more severe conditions if left untreated for an extended period. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a common indoor pollutant that can radically impact our daily activity levels. Indoor air concentration levels of over 450 parts per million (ppm) carbon dioxide are associated with decreased activity, headaches, and drowsiness, particularly in working environments.

Carbon dioxide sensors are routinely used to monitor indoor air quality and assess the efficiency of ventilation systems in offices, public buildings, and schools. The AQM Air Quality Monitor from SST Controls is equipped with a sensitive carbon dioxide sensor suitable for measuring air concentration in demanding applications.

AQM Carbon Dioxide Sensor

The AQM is a wall-mounted alarm transmitter designed to monitor up to three gases simultaneously: oxygen (O2); carbon monoxide (CO); and carbon dioxide. It can be configured to measure indoor temperatures, humidity, and barometric pressures if required.

The alarm is comprised of a 24 V supply and the requisite sensors. These are connected to a digital and an analog output that trips an alarm if monitored gases exceed pre-determined levels. In the case of carbon dioxide, maximum concentration levels for safe indoor air quality of public and domestic buildings are generally accepted as 1000 ppm. The carbon dioxide sensor of the AQM features a measuring range of 0 – 5000 ppm, with an increased capacity measuring range of 0 – 100,000 ppm available for demanding facilities management.

This dynamic measuring range is accurate to within 70 ppm or 5% of the carbon dioxide sensor’s reading. These readings can be regularly monitored using modular display attachments as part of an integrated building management system. Direct-monitoring of indoor gas concentrations is possible with the AQM, and if the carbon dioxide sensor registers concentrations of the gas at unacceptable levels, it triggers a visual and audible status indication.

Carbon Dioxide Sensors from SST Controls

SST Controls is on the cutting-edge of sensor technology for multi-gas monitoring in some of the most demanding applications worldwide. Our gas detection systems can measure concentration levels to outstanding degrees of accuracy to support process control, corrective action, and research and development.

We have designed and engineered a robust range of carbon dioxide sensors and gas monitors equipped with sensor products suitable for leading-edge detection of carbon dioxide in any environment.
